SENAI (JOHOR), 15 AUGUST 2024 – Paul San strengthened his hold on the Toyota Tour Order of Merit when he turned in a fine two-under 70 today to win the Supra Cup by two strokes at the demanding Allamanda course at Palm Resort Golf & Country Club.
San, who has set his sights on gaining entry into the Asian Tour by way of finishing among the top 10 on the Asian Development Tour, notched four birdies against two bogeys while Jeremiah Kim Leun Kwang who finished second, could only manage four birdies and four bogeys.
In joint third were Syahiran Syakir and Danny Chia whose 69 catapulted him up the ladder. Meanwhile A. Nateeshvar won the men’s amateur title when he finished with a solid 68 to sit jointly in 5th place with Nicholas Fung, Galven Green and Edven Ying at four-under 212.
San declared he’s still unable absorb the fact that he’s managed to win his second Toyota Tour event in such a short time. His first win was the Vios Cup at Templer Park CC in May. After this, San has a busy schedule on the ADT, with two events in Indonesia, Vietnam and Cambodia.
“I’m really happy with how I’m managing myself on the course,” said San. “I’ve been working on my game around the greens and even though it’s not quite up to where I want it to be, I’m still solid in other departments of the game.
“I’m thankful to my parents, coach Siew Ai, girlfriend and caddy John for supporting my journey so far and I hope to be able to maintain this form for the rest of the season.”
Winnie Ng maintained her current good form to achieve a wire-to-wire six-stroke victory in the Supra Cup Ladies Championship after adding a two-under 70 today for a 212 three-day aggregate. Geraldine Wong tried her best to close the gap but her 69 wasn’t good enough and she finished alone in second at 218.
Aretha Pan and Jocelyn shared third place after carding 222s.
It has been a successful return from the US for Ng, who last month won the Malaysian Amateur Ladies Open at Templer Park CC followed by the RSGC Ladies Amateur Open. This weekend she flies to Singapore to compete for Asia in a Ryder Cup-style competition against Europe. She will then compete in a Maybank LPGA qualifying event at the Kuala Lumpur GCC’s West Course.
A visibly overjoyed Ng reckons she will turn professional at the end of the year but before that she will sign up for the Toyota Tour qualifying school in Kota Seriemas GC next month, as well as qualifying schools in Taiwan and China. “I am so thankful to those who have been supporting me, especially my parents who have spent so much money, time and effort to get me where I am today,” said Ng.
“I’m also grateful to my coaches Koe Lai Yin and Jean Daniels who have been behind me all the way,” she added.
Ng opened her first hole with a dismal bogey. “I realised I was trying too much to control my game, so I told myself to let go and play more freely.” It worked as she reeled off birdies on holes 2, 3 and 7 holes before bogeying the 9th. At this stage it was a foregone conclusion that Ng would emerge victor. She proceeded to add birdies on 11 and 13 before giving away a stroke on the tricky par 3 17th.
