BERTAM, PENANG, 7 OCT 2024 – Johorean Daeng Rahman received an early boost to his Alphard Cup aspirations when he and his team emerged victorious in the pro-am competition at the long and tricky Penang Golf Resort layout here today.
Daeng, who won the Camry Cup at Forest City in the 2023 Toyota Tour season, captained his team to a 136 combined gross score in the modified scrambled format, winning on countback. His amateur team-mates were Tomokazu Manki, Koji Higuchi and Dai Takahashi.
Finishing second was Nasrullah Zulkifli, the Hilux Cup winner in Sabah and team-mates Dato Ahmad Nor Sabu, Arifin Awang and Mohd Jeferi Mohd Sani who also won the long-drive competition.
Dato’ Peppe Foo teed his ball to 42 inches to the cup in the Nearest-the-Pin competition while Hiroshi Miyake was nearest the line by nine inches.
Meanwhile 46 children from Penang and Kedah attended the Toyota Tour Junior Clinic at PGR, assisted by professionals Wafiyuddin Manaf, Wan Hasnul Danial, Zulaikah Nasser, Winnie Ng, Liyana Durisic and Amalia Shahzan.
The enthusiastic children aged 6 to 16 went through chipping and putting drills while the beginners were shown the basics at the driving range.
The Alphard Cup starts tomorrow at 7.30 with 73 men and 16 ladies. In the men’s draw, the marquee groups include Paul San, Fakhrul Akmal and Kim Leun Kwang teeing off at 7.50; Marcus Lim, Nasrullah Zulkifli and Galven Green at 8.00 while Edven Ying, Daeng Rahman and Ben Leong start at 8.10.
